Survival Saturdays
Joe Junior here. I’m almost 7 years old. I want to tell you about what goes on at our house on Saturdays.
Saturday mornings are weird. I wake up and the house has a creepy silence. My clock doesn’t work. The light won’t turn on. The toilet doesn’t even flush.
No, there hasn’t been an earthquake or war or anything like that.
Nope. It’s yet another of Dad’s Survival Saturdays.
“Dad, I really, really need to use the toilet.”
“Well,” says Dad, “in a situation like this where the infrastructure has collapsed –”
“Dad, nothing’s happened! You just turned off the water valve!”
“…in a hypothetical situation,” Dad continues, “where the water has stopped running you have two choices. Remember what they are?”
“Yeah, Dad,” I grumble. “I can dig a hole behind the garden shed or use a plastic bag.”
After I take care of business with one of the five million Ziploc bags Dad keeps hidden in the basement… it’s a chocolate rice protein shake for breakfast. It tastes pretty good. Just wish I didn’t have to filter water from the creek.
By noon I start to get used to it. Rice and beans for lunch. Beans and rice for dinner. By the end of the day I’ve had so much fun – it’s like camping – that I want to ask Dad if we can do a Survival Sunday.
But he always looks a little worn out after carrying all that firewood from the ravine (about three miles away).
