I’ve written about silver in the past. For example, here, here and here.

Last April, and again in September, the price of silver almost topped $50 an ounce. Today it’s selling for about $30 to $31 an ounce.

Since its high last fall, silver has been in a consolidation pattern and appears to be ready to rocket past $50 sometime between now and the end of the year.

Barclays Bank predicts that silver will hit $45 an ounce this year. Other experts believe it will hit $50.

If you started buying silver today, and the price went to $45/oz, you’d be making a 50% profit. If the price went to $50/oz, you’d be making a 67% profit.

Of course, once it hits $50 an ounce, silverbugs believe it will run up to a new a high. I happen to agree. How high it will go is hard to predict.

Remember that silver is not an investment so much as it is a hedge against inflation. As dollars become less valuable, the price of silver will go up. (If QE3 is implemented, the price of silver will spike almost immediately.)

Silver also has many industrial applications. Unlike gold, silver is a metal that is actually used up in manufacturing electronics. Without silver, many of the electronic devices you enjoy today could not be made.

And so the demand for silver comes not just from investors, but from large manufacturers.

I still think silver is a better place to put your money than gold. Silver has posted bigger gains than gold in the last couple years (on a percentage basis). And it would be much easier for the price of silver to double (to $60/oz) than it would be for the price of gold to double (to $3,200/oz).

Plus, if we ever get to the point where dollars are shunned, silver rounds and coins will be the perfect “currency” for trade.

I continue to buy more silver every month through my Silver Saver account. If you don’t have one, I recommend you get one and start buying silver as soon as possible.

Don’t be scared. Be prepared.
-Survival Joe

P.S. It’s my personal belief that silver is a bargain at any price below $40 an ounce, so I don’t pay too much attention to what the price of silver does each day.

I just keep buying up a little bit at a time, knowing that I’m buying myself a measure of financial security for if and when the dollar is relegated to the trash bin of failed fiat currencies.

Getting clean water is going to be a high priority in any sort of short-term or long-term crisis.

The tricky thing about water is it’s heavy and difficult to transport.

You can store up a supply of water in your home using 55-gallon plastic barrels. You can also get rainwater collection barrels to collect rainwater from your downspouts. This stored water will need to be filtered again when you’re ready to drink it.

Unfortunately, if you are forced to flee your home, you won’t be able to take this water with you. You will need a way to harvest water from other sources like lakes and rivers.

That’s why I strongly recommend that you have at least one good portable water filter. This water filter can be used to filter water that you’ve already stored at home… or… any other water source you find in nature.

I currently have two high-quality portable water filters. One model I got at REI a few years ago. It is designed specifically to work with Nalgene bottles, and has a ceramic filter that must be abraded with a green Brillo pad every 3-4 fills.

The other portable water filter I have is called the Paratroopers Water Purifier.

It is compact and lightweight (only 88 grams), but don’t let its small size fool you. It can filter 2,000 liters of water before the filter needs replacing.

More importantly, an independent lab found that the Paratroopers Water Purifier was just as effective as a popular full-size water purifier at removing E.coli bacteria from water.

This portable water filter is perfect for stowing in a glove box or bug-out bag. It will slip easily into a purse and will even fit into a pocket on a pair of cargo shorts or pants. In other words, you can take it with you anywhere.

Unlike some emergency preparedness items you may buy, the Paratroopers Water Purifier can be used immediately for camping and hiking trips. Yet its value will be even greater to you should you need it in an emergency situation.

You can get your own Paratroopers Water Purifier here:

Today, a question from a reader:

“Thank you for your articles and website. They have been real helpful to my family and I. My husband and I have just started stocking up on supplies because of what is currently happening in our country.

“The question I have for you is this, my husband and I are unable to purchase a survival retreat like I have seen through various research on the web. We are sort of stuck unable to sell our old house because of the housing market. We have two mortgages to pay.

“I notice that a lot of people suggest having a place to go. Unfortunately we do not have any family away from the city that would even be on board. A lot of them praise Obama. We just don’t see eye to eye when it comes to our country.

“Do you think it would be wise in case of disaster if we packed up our gear and headed to a free camping ground? Do you think other people would be there trying to rob us of our supplies?

“I am trying to put together a plan in case we have to leave our city. If we were to stay in our urban area it may not be safe because of where our house is situated. We’re a corner house on a frequented street. I guess I am worried about looters and such.

“Our backyard is exposed to our neighbors so we cannot grow a garden back there without everyone knowing about it. Both my husband and I would rather take our two year old and gear and get away from any chaos that might happen.

“Any suggestions for our situation?”

******

That’s a tough question.

One strategy I’m using is to develop friendships with my neighbors and other survivalists in my community. Ultimately, it will be easier to survive long-term in a home than at a campground (depending on where in the country you live, of course).

I live in Colorado. There are really only three months out of the year when camping is feasible. The rest of the year would be too snowy and cold, especially with young children.

Staying at a campground might be a good short-term plan if you expect civil unrest in your city or town — and you expect it to happen during warmer weather. Although your house may be damaged while you are gone depending on the level of violence and looting that takes place. (Think New Orleans.)

The key would be to find a campground that is secluded and rarely visited. If you do meet other people there, I would expect they would be like-minded. I do not expect looting to happen at secluded campgrounds (at least not in the beginning). I do expect there to be camaraderie and a sense of community.

Generally speaking, good people pull together in hard times.

Either way, you may at some point need to come back to your home if the crisis lasts longer than two or three weeks. It’s at that point that good relationships within your community could go a long way toward your safety and security.

But keep in mind: If things get worse while you’re away, it may be difficult if not impossible to get back to your home. What if gas is hard to come by? What if the city has been locked down such that nobody can get in? (Many people who wanted to help the people of New Orleans were turned away and not permitted to proceed past FEMA road blocks.)

One resource I recommend for people who don’t have a survival retreat is called “Survive In Place” by David Morris. The basic premise is that most people won’t be able to leave their homes in a crisis. Therefore, David’s course is all about how to survive in your home.

You can learn more about it here:

Do you regularly go four hours between lunch and dinner without eating or drinking anything (other than water)?

If not, how do you expect to handle a situation where one can of beans is all you get to eat for an entire day?

Why not start training your liver and your body now? Stick with just three meals a day. No eating before bed. No soda, juice, or snacks between meals.

Not only will your body feel more balanced and your mind more focused, you will also eliminate a major distraction (snacking) from your daily routine.

If you are in the habit of snacking and drinking sugary beverages, a sudden switch to Liver Snacking can be uncomfortable. Also, if you’re not eating balanced meals in the first place, you may find it impossible to go even two hours without eating.

That’s why John Manley created the Liver Snacking Program.

It shows you step-by-step how to switch to a “3-meals-day” lifestyle. Within a few weeks you’ll find yourself able to go 4-6 hours without eating or drinking anything except water.

The best part? You won’t feel hungry in between mealsÉ you won’t suffer from low blood sugar if dinner is lateÉ your weight will begin to normalizeÉ your digestion will improveÉ and you’ll feel more focused, more energized, and more motivated about life.

Liver Snacking turns your liver into the ultimate “food storage” unit.

You may have two years of emergency rations stored away in your basement. But even then, it’s quite possible that in a real emergency you might not have access to any of it. But you’ll still have access to your liver.

Start training your liver now to burn fat and release sugar into your blood stream on demand. If you’d like to learn more, you can get a free copy of Liver Snacking Basics here: http://clickora.com/liversnacking

Imagine you’re in a survival situation where food is not available. Maybe there was an earthquake while you were riding the subway. Maybe the currency has collapsed and thieves have raided your emergency supply. Maybe… okay, you get the picture.

It may take 12, 24, or 48 hours before you see another morsel of food.

Your immediate concern is to get clean water. Food can always wait.

But, for most people, going without food for even four hours feels like a nightmare.

Their bodies are used to taking in calories constantly. Many people practically live with a sugary drink in one hand.

And, yes, your body needs a constant supply of sugar. If your blood sugar drops too low for even ten minutes, you could die.

Thankfully, your liver actually stores sugar (in the form of glycogen). When you’ve finished digesting your last meal, your liver should activate and start slowly releasing sugar into your blood stream.

Most people’s livers, however, are “out of order.” Calories always going in (but not going out) have made their livers congested and idle. Many Americans will even have a bedtime snack, which robs their liver of an opportunity to work while they snooze.

A good preparedness strategy is to start training your liver to balance your blood sugar between meals. Stop snacking. Eat three balanced meals a day. Make sure they include protein, fat, and carbs, preferably from high-quality food sources like whole grains, beans, whole fruits and vegetables. The rest of the day stick to water.

Artificially trying to keep a stable blood sugar through constant snacking and drinking creates a roller coaster effect with our blood sugar levels.

A properly functioning liver, on the other hand, can easily release just the right amount of sugar into your blood stream to keep you operating at peak performance.

A friend of mine named John Manley calls this process “Liver Snacking” because you are “snacking” on your liver’s supply of sugar.

Not only does your liver store its own sugar, it also directs your body to burn fat. So “Liver Snacking” will prepare you for a food shortage situation in the future. Liver Snacking will also help you maintain a normal body weight today.

Find out John’s simple method for getting your liver in “Liver Snacking” mode via his free Liver Snacking Basics Guide (click here).

Emergency rations can be easily lost in a disaster. But losing your liver is pretty darn hard (without losing your life).

Don’t be Scared. Get Your Liver Prepared.

P.S. Tomorrow, I’ll share with you a simple routine you can start immediately that will get your liver ready for a food crisis situation. In the mean time, check out John C. A.

So how will the average person handle even the first 24 hours of a food shortage?

Most people can’t go four hours without eating or drinking something with calories in it. My wife, for instance, seems to need food of some sort every couple hours. Me? I can have nothing but water for 24 hours, lift weights at the gym, and wait another 12 hours until breaking fast in the morning.

We live in a culture where people are constantly eating (or drinking) food. It may be an apple. It may be a can of Pepsi. It might be a slice of left-over pizza. It may be Dove chocolates or Hershey Kisses. The three-meals-a-day routine of our ancestors has vanished thanks to prepackaged food, microwaves, and fast food joints.

But what if the grocery store shelves go bare? What if a natural disaster destroys food delivery lines? The little food most people have in their homes may need to last weeks instead of days. People may need to ration their caloric resources.

Your average citizen would most likely suffer from symptoms of low blood sugar, dizziness, caffeine headaches, and irritability. All because their bodies are totally unaccustomed to living without food for more than three hours (at best).

This, however, is not how your body was designed to work. Instead, a specific organ in your body was designed to keep your blood sugar balanced when digestion and absorption finishes.

That organ is your liver.

Tomorrow, I’ll share with you a simple way to get your liver ready for a food shortage. Instead of fearing the idea of food rationing in an emergency, you’ll be able to keep your energy up and your mind clear.

I recently read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen aloud to my daughter.

The story is about a 13-year-old boy named Brian who crashes in the Canadian wilderness and must figure out how to survive in the wild.

Of course, he has his hatchet, but not much else.

The story follows his realization of how little he really knows about survival and how he uses his wits and a little creativity to make it on his own, apart from modern conveniences.

He has to figure out a way to build a shelter… how to find food… how to create fire… how to defend against unwanted creatures… and more.

What I find most interesting is the “thought journey” the author takes us on. For example, on page 56 we read:

What was there to eat?

What had he read or seen that told him about food in the wilderness? Hadn’t there been something? A show, yes, a show on television about air force pilots and some kind of course they took. A survival course. All right, he had the show coming into his thoughts now. The pilots had to live in the desert. They put them in the desert down in Arizona or someplace and they had to live for a week. They had to find food and water for a week.

For water they made a sheet of plastic into a dew-gathering device and for food they ate lizards.

That was it. Of course Brian had lots of water and there weren’t too many lizards in the Canadian woods, that he knew. One of the pilots had used a watch crystal as a magnifying glass to focus the sun and start a fire so they didn’t have to eat the lizards raw. But Brian had a digital watch, without a crystal, broken at that. So the show didn’t help him much.

As I read the book, I felt it provided fairly good survival advice.

But why would I recommend survival fiction like Hatchet?

It’s simple, really.

When you read a story, you tend to retain more of what you read.

Non-fiction, while valuable in its own right, can be harder to remember unless you actually go out and apply what you learn.

So if you’re short on time, or if you find it difficult to read non-fiction, reading a book like Hatchet could still be valuable.

Here are a few other survival fiction titles that I have read or are on my to-read list:

The Road – by Cormac McCarthy – How a father and son survive during a post-apocalyptic world where cannibalism is rampant and street gangs kill to get what they want.

The Long Winter – by Laura Ingalls Wilder – This story documents the long winter of 1880-1881 in the Dakota Territory and how the Ingalls family manages to survive even though blizzards cut off all supplies from the outside. (Actually, this book is not fiction, but I’ve included it here anyway.)

Alas, Babylon – by Pat Frank – I own this one, but haven’t read it. A nuclear holocaust wipes out nearly the entire U.S. population. Survivors in a small Florida town pull together to survive and rebuild.

One Second After – by William R. Forstchen – I’ve not read this book yet, but it’s been recommended to me multiple times. One North Carolina man tries to save his family after an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) sends America back to the dark ages.

For more survival fiction, here is a long list on The Survivalist Blog.

Don’t be scared. Be prepared.

Recently I’ve been receiving more emails from subscribers. A question that’s coming up more often is, “How long until the poop hits the fan?”

For example, one reader asks:

Good Morning Joe,
I was wondering if you had any idea (I know it would just be your hunch) how much time b4 the fan gets hit? I haven’t done anything up to this point and I just would like some kind of time frame b4 I had better be set for delays in service if not denial of service(s). I do see some very dark clouds on the horizon. Thanks for any help!

Another reader expressed her skepticism of my assertion that 2012 would be a pivotal year. She says:

I agree with everything I’ve read (of yours) but question the timing you have. The Aftershock people (Wiedemier), who have an excellent track record, are forecasting inflation hitting the roof within 1 1/2 to 2 years. What do you believe will be the precipitating factor and why do you think that “this is the year”?

Yet another reader makes the distinction between short-term survival scenarios and the complete meltdown of society as we know it:

I’m just curious, what do you think it would take to push things over the edge…. a series of economic events… one or more power grid issues… an attack on our soil? I’m referring to complete economic shutdown and/or the meltdown of society as we know it. That’s essentially what I am most concerned about, and what I am now preparing for… to get off the grid if and when things really hit the fan. Short term scenarios we’re already pretty well prepared for, as we’ve been building our homestead for a while now. Also, how far along do you think it would be until we’re going to lose it all? I guess I just want to know how long we have to continue to prepare.

As you can see, there is a clear and common thread among all these questions. All of them want to know more about what I see happening in 2012. More importantly, all of them want to know how much time they have left to prepare.

So, let’s dig in…

Major Legislation that Could Make 2012 Dangerous

On December 31, 2011, president Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This law suspends habeas corpus and authorizes the indefinite detention of American citizens without charge, without trial, and without due process of law.

The full consequences of this law remain to be seen. And while we don’t know at this point exactly how it will be applied, there is an historical precedent for suspension of habeas corpus.

The first president to suspend habeas corpus was Abraham Lincoln. He declared emergency powers during the Civil War and detained numerous Americans in military prisons. Many were imprisoned for merely being sympathetic to the Confederate cause. Speaking your mind became a federal crime.

Such thought suppression is again happening in this country. It began with George W. Bush and the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security. Bush’s policies have now been formally codified by the recently passed NDAA.

But it’s about to get worse…

The U.S. Congress recently passed a new law that bears the somewhat innocuous title of the “Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011.” The bill (H.R. 347) has already passed both the House and the Senate, and it is expected that Obama will soon sign it into law.

Say Goodbye to Free Speech

H.R. 347 is one of biggest infringements on free speech ever passed in this country. It basically outlaws all peaceful political protests in the United States.

The Salem News reports, “Once signed, HR 347 will empower federal agents to arrest and bring felony criminal charges against citizens engaged in political protests anywhere in the USA.”

And Infowars echoes the conclusion that “Under the act, the government is also given the power to bring charges against Americans engaged in political protest anywhere in the country.”

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that the federal government is grasping at straws to preserve its power. The new bill takes direct aim at both the Tea Party and Occupy movements, and sends a strong message to concerned Americans:

You no longer have the right to publicly assemble and peacefully protest what’s happening politically in this country.

Remember, this bill has not been passed yet, but it would be shocking if Obama vetoed it. Here’s the latest progress update from GovTrack:

The bill was first passed by the House on February 28, 2011. It was then passed by the Senate almost a year later on February 6, 2012. It has now been presented to Obama and is awaiting his signature.

Is it a coincidence that this bill will become law during a heated presidential election year? I think not. This has probably been planned for some time. We know it has at the very least been in the works for more than a year.

What Are the Implications of H.R. 347?

Americans are not known for docile compliance with oppressive laws like this one.

If H.R. 347 is signed into law, I expect those in the Occupy movement to be among the first people to test the resolve of the federal government. They may also be some of the first to be imprisoned (up to 10 years) for peacefully protesting.

The year 2011 was proof positive that social unrest in this country is growing fast. The passage of H.R. 347 will only exacerbate the situation.

I personally will not be part of any public demonstrations or political gatherings. Best to avoid government buildings altogether since H.R. 347 will turn all government property into strange legal “black holes” where the Bill of Rights will no longer apply.

But now let me shift gears to what may seem like an unrelated event that happened one week ago. I’m talking about…

Andrew Breitbart’s Untimely Death

Andrew Breitbart was an extremely influential journalist. AlterNet reports:

He played an outsized role in some of the world’s most influential news sites, working with Matt Drudge as an editor at the Drudge Report before helping Arianna Huffington launch the Huffington Post. More recently he started his own successful network of conservative news websites, including Breitbart.com, BigGovernment.com and BigHollywood.com, which draw millions of visitors every month and earned him a hefty salary and a high profile. But he achieved a new level of notoriety in the past two years, after he helped orchestrate a series of crudely-edited video stings that led to the resignation of Shirley Sherrod, a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture executive, and the collapse of the social-advocacy association ACORN. These and other triumphs—including the Twitter-pic takedown of New York congressman Anthony Wiener—turned Breitbart into a right-wing hero, a sought-after speaker on the right-wing lecture circuit, and a regular opinionator on Fox News.

On March 1, 2012, Andrew Breitbart died while walking home just after midnight. Ironically, Breitbart died the same exact day he had promised to release videos that he claimed would completely derail Obama’s presidency.

On February 9, during a “Blog Bash” event in Washington DC, Breitbart told Lawrence Sinclair: “Wait til they see what happens March 1st.”

Breitbart also announced his intentions at a CPAC meeting, and in the weeks that followed, he reiterated his intention multiple times that he would release the tapes on March 1st. Paul Joseph Watson, writing for Infowars, made this observation:

You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to appreciate the downright weirdness of Breitbart predicting a major event to occur on March 1st, only for him to end up dying on that very date. Breitbart was officially pronounced dead at 12:19am.

While some claim that Breitbart died from “natural causes” (i.e. a heart attack), I find it a bit too much to swallow. It’s just far too coincidental. It was well-known that Breitbart was unarmed and had no personal protection. It would have been a simple matter for the CIA to eliminate him.

Just as the NDAA and H.R. 347 send a strong message to U.S. citizens, so the timing of Breitbart’s death sends a strong message to journalists: You are free to speak, but you may pay for your words with your life.

In the two videos below, Alex Jones talks with Mancow Muller about Breitbart’s untimely death. (The second video repeats a little bit of the first one. The new material picks up around the 3-minute mark.)

‘Mancow’ Muller: Was Breitbart Murdered? Part 1 of 2

‘Mancow’ Muller: Was Breitbart Murdered? Part 2 of 2

In case it’s not clear at this point, the powers that be are attacking free speech on all sides. They’re using oppressive laws to suppress free speech, and as Breitbart’s death implies, they may even be carrying out mob-style “hits.”

The Major Turning Point: War with Iran

Although the NDAA, H.R. 347, and Andrew Breitbart’s death are much cause for concern, I don’t believe these events on their own will bring about the collapse of the U.S. Rather, I believe the turning point will come when the U.S. or Israel goes to war with Iran.

War with Iran has been in the works for many years now. Rumors have surfaced fairly frequently since 2007. In fact, there was a point where I was strongly convinced war with Iran would happen in the fall of 2008. There have been a few close calls since then, but I think this year it may finally happen.

One of the reasons war has been delayed so long is division among U.S. leaders. Some want war and others do not. In fact, one article I read indicated that Obama was one of the major reasons the war had not yet been started.

But Israel is growing tired of U.S. procrastination. So it seems they are now planning to strike Iran without warning. Some insiders claim war is planned for this spring.

If Israel starts a war with Iran, I guarantee you the U.S. will be sucked into it in a matter of days or weeks. There are just too many Zionists in Washington for any other outcome. Unfortunately, the majority of Christians will support the war. Some will see it simplistically as “good vs. evil.” Others will see it as “hastening Armageddon.”

Although God may show us mercy and postpone the war for a few more years, I believe he has purposed it and that it will happen in the near future. Biblical prophecies seem to indicate that Jerusalem will be destroyed “instantly, suddenly” and “will be punished with thunder and earthquake and loud noise, with whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire” (Isaiah 29:5-6). When it is over, Jerusalem will be like a potter’s vessel “which cannot again be repaired” (Jeremiah 19:11).

Jerusalem has been destroyed before (Rome took it apart in 70-73 A.D.), but the city has always been rebuilt. I believe the above passages indicate that Jerusalem will be destroyed in a nuclear event of some kind. Both the United States and Israel will go to war thinking they cannot fail. But I believe God will use Iran to bring down both Israel and the United States.

Remember: The U.S. is overextended as it is. As a nation, we do not have the resources to wage ongoing wars around the globe. What’s more, history shows that imperialism often ends badly for the nation engaging in it. Both Rome and England collapsed, in part, because they overextended themselves militarily. (But who cares about history, right?)

The Time Left to Prepare Is Short

This article is now quite long, so let me try to wrap it up.

I believe the time we have to prepare is now very short. It could be as short as a month or two. But it could also be a year or longer.

But no matter what you or I may personally believe, it just makes good sense to get prepared as soon as you can. If you believe the U.S. is going to experience an economic collapse in 2016, does that mean you wait until 2015 to start preparing? No way! You start preparing today.

In a future article, I’ll write more about how I’m preparing and how you can do the same.

Don’t be scared. Be prepared.

Apologies for not posting as regularly as I should. As you may or may not know, I make a living as a freelance writer.

I pay may taxes in January. So November through February is always a bit challenging as I’m doing accounting, saving money for Uncle Sam, and still operating my freelance business.

On top of that, we’re expecting our fourth child in late June. So there have been doctor appointments and so on as we prepare for our family to grow again.

Last year was an interesting year for me. I continued to prepare in various ways (and wrote about what I was doing), but felt less urgency than I did during the years 2008 through 2010. Perhaps it was because of the preparations I’ve already made, or perhaps because I felt the big changes weren’t going to hit until 2012.

Anyway, 2012 is now here and I feel there will be massive changes this year. It is a critical year. It is a year in which I plan to redouble my efforts to be as prepared as I possibly can be with the resources I have.

That is a key statement, by the way. “To be as prepared as I possibly can be with the resources I have.”

Everybody is in a different place in life. Everybody has different incomes, different families, different living situations, different geographic opportunities and constraints.

The way I’m preparing may be quite different than the way you are preparing. When it comes to preparing, you must prepare based on where YOU are at in life.

Recently I received an email from a man who’d just unsubscribed from my email list. He said the reason he was unsubscribing was this: “wife died don’t care now.”

That was an important reminder for me to always enjoy the present and cherish every moment with loved ones. It was also a reminder that people’s circumstances are always different, always changing.

No matter where you’re at currently, I hope I can help you along the way.

With that in mind, I plan to publish new articles each and every week throughout the year 2012. Some articles will be more practical. Others will be commentary on current events. And others, I hope, will be answers to questions you’ve submitted to me by email.

I will start publishing these new posts this week, so keep your eyes peeled.

As always, thanks for reading.

-Survival Joe

P.S. One more thing… I’ve got some exciting plans for this year, one of which is to start a “Mastermind Club” where I do a live phone interview once a month with another “average joe” who is preparing for the worst.

I’ll get more details out to you soon.

As I was reading A People’s History of the United States of America this morning, I came across this interesting quote:

Times were hard in 1676. “There was genuine distress, genuine poverty…. All contemporary sources speak of the great mass of people as living in severe economic straits,” writes Wilcomb Washburn, who, using British colonial records, has done an exhaustive study of Bacon’s Rebellion. It was a dry summer, ruining the corn crop, which was needed for food, and the tobacco crop, needed for export. Governor Berkeley, in his seventies, tired of holding office, wrote wearily about his situation: “How miserable that man is that Governes a People where six parts of seaven at least are Poore Endebted Discontented and Armed.” (p. 40)

As the author Howard Zinn points out, the “phrase ‘six in seaven’ suggests the existence of an upper class not so impoverished.”

Indeed, all records indicate a large income inequality between the “Jamestown elite” and the poor white frontiersman who were forced to move westward into Indian territory to find land for themselves.

Anyway, I found Governor Berkeley’s statement quite profound since it seems to mirror circumstances in America today.

The “Wall Street elite” continue to grow richer at the expense of the average citizen. Jobs are disappearing as quickly as childhood innocence. With every passing month, Americans become more “Poore Endebted Discontented and Armed.”

What will come of it? I can’t say for sure, although history provides a few unpleasant examples.

Here’s what I do know: The direction our nation is going doesn’t look good. The train is headed toward the side of a mountain, the brakes are out, and everybody is arguing over what color we should paint the caboose.
